About Us

Paul Mullen - Founder and Managing Director

Paul has been in electronic development for the entirety of his career and even before then - building a bedrock of vital skills and knowledge from a childhood spent developing hobby electronics.

PaniK technology, Paul’s first venture set up in Bristol in 1989, acquired an enviable reputation for delivering one-stop electronic design services to inventors, emerging businesses and corporations before its sale in 2011, boasting an extensive client list including Mars Drinks and Smith and Nephew.

After seeing the Science Park’s foundations go down from his kitchen window and going for a sneaky look around, Paul decided a second venture was the way forward and so, in 2012 Cubik Innovation was established, initially as a lifestyle business! Three years on Cubik have gone from the team of one to a team of nearly twenty technical and creative team members with a stunning client list spanning Bristol’s inventors to multinational companies.

One of Paul’s biggest passions is helping to develop the talents of our younger engineers with the majority of his time in the office spent mentoring his team, helping them find better ways of making things work. To this end, Cubik have a great history of taking on interns and apprentices and cultivating a lasting partnership.
When he’s not at Cubik Towers (which doesn’t leave a huge amount of time) Paul works in sound and light engineering, working with Bristol based bands and live music venues, and is the oracle on the forgotten bands of the 80s.

Sam Beard - Operations Manager

Alongside managing the Production Team and all manufacture projects, Sam is integral to the running of our ISO:9001 quality management system and the strategic route planning of the business, working closely with Paul and Business Manager Sophie to ensure Cubik are delivering 100% on our customer’s expectations. Sam’s department has become the jewel in Cubik’s crown, with two production lines and designated prototyping areas, shipping a running tally of over 8000 units.

Outside of Cubik Sam is heavily involved with his local scout group, spending most weekends during summer on camping trips, the remaining few spent off-roading in his beloved Land Rover.

Russell Harris - Senior Design Engineer

Russell’s one of our multi-skilled, multi-talented team members - the go-to guy in Cubik’s design department for CAD and quality technical documentation. Russell was once one of our Plymouth University interns, first meeting Paul at his previous company where, under his guidance, he learnt a great deal about technical documentation, fault finding and testing.

Like most of us at Cubik Russell loves to travel, spending a gap year in Australia between his studies where he was able to practice his other love of landscape photography. Russell’s latest obsession is 3D printing, putting a lot of time into persuading Paul a 3D scanner is the next thing on Cubik’s wish list.

Camilla Saunders - Finance Manager

Camilla joins Cubik as our new Finance Manager. Claiming to know little about the world of electronics/engineering, Camilla advises that the reason she was so drawn to Cubik was the warm, fun and friendly environment she felt as soon as she walked through the door, a real community feel.

Always looking to try new things, Camilla has tried her hand at surfing with, what she claims, bad results. Another music lover, Camilla is always on the lookout for new music concerts and festivals to attend, we feel a Cubik day out on the cards!

While already holding a Business degree, Camilla is always looking to add new skills to her name and so is now currently studying for CIMA which will definitely come in useful in her role.

Living abroad in Bristol, Camilla calls Sweden her homeland and goes back to visit often but loving to travel she also relishes visiting new places and can add Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand to her list of places she’s explored.

What time of day is the best for innovation?

"If there is something I can’t figure out how to do then I can be sure that the answer will come to me in the middle of the night."

Camilla Saunders - Finance Manager

Jean-Paul Astal-Stain – Intern Design Engineer

Jean-Paul (JP) Astal-Stain is the latest intern to join Cubik, currently undertaking studies at Bath University in (MEng) Electronic Engineering with Space Science & Technology. JP chose Cubik for his internship year as he felt that he would be exposed to a variety of different aspects of electronics which we are certain we have delivered on!

The general problem-solving aspect of engineering is how JP first became attracted to the field and specifically electronics due to their relevance in modern day applications as well as applying mathematics on a day to day basis.

JP has many interests, particularly being an avid rock climber, gym-bunny and drinker of pints. He can also claim to be an Arkwright Scholar.

Moving up the coast to carry out his studies, JP has lived in Jersey and Torquay before calling Bath home for uni and Bristol for his internship with Cubik.

Luke is one of our Graduate Design Engineers who has joined us from Aston University where he studied BEng Electronics & Computer Science. He is slowly getting use to our many Bristol ways, as he is originally from Wrenbury in Cheshire (gravy and chips anyone?).

Luke’s interests in problem solving form the backbone of his work at Cubik as he currently forms part of the Test Team which resides in the Production Department. Aside from work, Luke likes to keep up with his fitness and has spent 6 months backpacking around France. Luke is another Cubite who has a passion for his music, particularly listening to metal and rock whilst working hard. When asked what his favourite hobby is, Luke advised he has recently taken up alpine sports on the slopes of the Mendips and currently holds a Level 2 in Snowboarding.

What time of day is the best for innovation?

"Anytime, just not in the morning."

Luke Prentice – Graduate Engineer

Marijan Cimerman – Graduate Engineer

Marijan has always had a great interest in electronics; ever since he was a child when his father showed him some basic battery powered circuits with lights and motors, “A life in engineering was just a natural development for me”. Originally from Bjelovar in Croatia, Marijan obtained a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Zagreb, one of the most prestigious universities for this subject in the country. Having had several engineering jobs throughout Europe, Marijan has finally found Bristol and Cubik.

Marijan defines himself as a “pretty boring person”, but this is simply because his interests are his work (having been lucky enough to have met and worked with him, we know this to be far from the truth). Keen on research and development of products, when he meets the right person, they often spend hours discussing and exploring advanced topics such as analogue electronics design, RF and high power. Because of this passion for engineering, some people (his girlfriend) say he spends too much time working.  Marijan is also a self-proclaimed petrol head.

The best kind of Innovation happens when?

"I have a new problem to solve."

Marijan Cimerman – Graduate Engineer

Mariusz Bugajski – Production Engineer

Mariusz forms an integral part of our Production Team as a further Production Engineer. With a degree in Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) Mariusz was drawn to Cubik as he relishes the opportunity to learn more about electronics from an experienced and well rounded team. So glad you think so!

This leads on to Mariusz’s interests, tinkering with electronics, drawing by hand and building his knowledge of physics are all useful pastimes when being an engineer but he can also add playing the guitar to his talents, we should start a Cubik band!

Mariusz is always able to provide some refreshing words of wisdom, such as claiming that he knows 21 different ways to cause damage using a potato!

The best kind of Innovation happens when?

"When it is done instinctively."

Mariusz Bugajski – Production Engineer
