About Us

Paul Mullen - Founder and Managing Director

Paul has been in electronic development for the entirety of his career and even before then - building a bedrock of vital skills and knowledge from a childhood spent developing hobby electronics.

PaniK technology, Paul’s first venture set up in Bristol in 1989, acquired an enviable reputation for delivering one-stop electronic design services to inventors, emerging businesses and corporations before its sale in 2011, boasting an extensive client list including Mars Drinks and Smith and Nephew.

After seeing the Science Park’s foundations go down from his kitchen window and going for a sneaky look around, Paul decided a second venture was the way forward and so, in 2012 Cubik Innovation was established, initially as a lifestyle business! Three years on Cubik have gone from the team of one to a team of nearly twenty technical and creative team members with a stunning client list spanning Bristol’s inventors to multinational companies.

One of Paul’s biggest passions is helping to develop the talents of our younger engineers with the majority of his time in the office spent mentoring his team, helping them find better ways of making things work. To this end, Cubik have a great history of taking on interns and apprentices and cultivating a lasting partnership.
When he’s not at Cubik Towers (which doesn’t leave a huge amount of time) Paul works in sound and light engineering, working with Bristol based bands and live music venues, and is the oracle on the forgotten bands of the 80s.

Sam Beard - Production Manager

Alongside managing the Production Team and all manufacture projects, Sam is integral to the running of our ISO:9001 quality management system and the strategic route planning of the business, working closely with Paul and Business Manager Sophie to ensure Cubik are delivering 100% on our customer’s expectations. Sam’s department has become the jewel in Cubik’s crown, with two production lines and designated prototyping areas, shipping a running tally of over 8000 units.

Outside of Cubik Sam is heavily involved with his local scout group, spending most weekends during summer on camping trips, the remaining few spent off-roading in his beloved Land Rover.

The best innovation happens when...

"...when your short on time, faced with a big problem but you know finding the answer will reap great reward"

Sam Beard

Matthew Griffiths - Design Manager

Exciting new times for Cubik involve recruiting Matthew as our Design Manager. Matthew has quickly become an integral part of the design team with his wealth of knowledge gained during his 32 years in the Electronics industry where he has worked alongside Blue Chip multinational companies such as Rolls-Royce Nuclear. Matthew ensures that the right attention to detail and documentation is applied throughout the product development process and looks to use his experience gained across many industries to guide the department to deliver right first time performance.

Matthews interest in electronics & engineering began at a very early age whilst watching his father and uncle during his primary school years and he owes his passion for the field to them. Matthew advises that his main goal as Design Manager is to develop and encourage young engineers into the electronics industry. Outside of work, Matthew is a keen photographer and enjoys holidaying to new places to then return with thousands of pictures to sort.

Russell Harris - Design Engineer

Russell’s one of our multi-skilled, multi-talented team members - the go-to guy in Cubik’s design department for CAD and quality technical documentation. Russell was once one of our Plymouth University interns, first meeting Paul at his previous company where, under his guidance, he learnt a great deal about technical documentation, fault finding and testing.

Like most of us at Cubik Russell loves to travel, spending a gap year in Australia between his studies where he was able to practice his other love of landscape photography. Russell’s latest obsession is 3D printing, putting a lot of time into persuading Paul a 3D scanner is the next thing on Cubik’s wish list.

Shannon Cribb - Production and Design Apprentice

Shannon joined Cubik in 2014 as our very first apprentice undertaking her HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Wiltshire College. Having completed her HNC with a merit in the summer of 2016, Shannon has started her HND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in September of the same year. In her time at Cubik to date, Shannon has been an integral part of the production team, and will be using the knowledge she has gained to take on one of Cubik’s toughest challenges, designing the company electronic Christmas card! Watch this space…

In her free time, Shannon enjoys making the most of her Bristol City FC season ticket, pledging her allegiance to the Robins from the singing stands.

What does Innovation mean to you?

"High-level problem solving"

Elisa Plaza - Design Engineer

Eli completes our epic Design (dream) team, with a Degree in Telecommunications and a Masters in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, she definitely knows her stuff. Moving to England in 2013, Eli worked for Bright Innovations Ltd before moving to Cubik which of course we couldn’t be more pleased about. Eli’s interest in engineering derives from her hands on approach and love of being a part of the whole design process.

Aside from Cubik, Eli has a passion for cooking and her delicious homemade meals are the envy of us all at lunchtime! Eli is also our resident cyclist and shames the rest of us with her daily cycle to work and even finds time to undertake her new favourite hobby, sewing.

What time of the day is the best for Innovation?

“In between leaving the office and getting home, it always comes to me on my ride home”

Eli Plaza

Mercedes Tilling - Office Coordinator

Mercedes joined Cubik in the Summer of 2016, just as the business moved to its new premises! With studies in Product Design, Mercedes is perfectly placed to ensure the successful delivery of projects against time, cost and ISO:9001 standards; enabling a high-level awareness of sales, project progress and company quality procedure.

Sitting amidst “Admin Corner”, Mercedes works alongside the Project Managers and Accounts department to ensure her expert eye for detail and organisation gets put to best use while managing the day to day running of the office.

Mercedes’ love for a party meant she swiftly took on the role of social planner so when there’s an upcoming night out you’ll be sure to know about it….and the dress code!
Outside of Cubik, Mercedes is a keen gym attendee and is also using her design background to plan the interior renovation of her first home which comes in handy as we finalise the design of our new office.

Will is one of our software stalwarts, starting off life at Cubik with assisting on one of our largest projects to date. Electronic Engineering and Software wasn’t always Will’s calling in life, he has a colourful and interesting career lead-up, working on solar farms in Spain for instance, certainly making for some interesting Friday afternoon anecdotes.

Will loves electronic music and his vinyl collection...in his own words he also enjoys ‘occasional exercise’.
