Automatic inflating barrier to protect properties against the threat of flooding

Aquabar approached Cubik with an idea for an inflatable flood defence system which fits in the doorway of a home or property. When the device detects the threat of flooding it automatically inflates, creating a barrier that keeps the water out of the property.

Aquabar had developed a simple mechanical rig that could be inflated with an electric tyre inflator but needed help developing a proof of concept solution that would demonstrate the possibility of automated inflation. It also had to include a function that would enable the user to deflate the device once the property was no longer under threat. In addition, the unit had to be battery powered to mitigate the risk of power cuts and provide a method of recharging the battery once power had been restored.

Cubik designed and built 2 technology demonstrator units using a rapid prototyping PCB and various standard components, combined with a commercial off the shelf enclosure. The completed unit uses an external float switch that is mounted to an exterior wall to detect rising flood water. When flooding is detected, the Floodbar automatically inflates blocking out water to protect the user’s property. The system continuously monitors the pressure and keeps the Floodbar topped up in case of air leaks. Once the flood has receded or the threat of flooding has diminished, it can be deflated by the user and reset.
