Engineering Energy – Critical plant monitoring system
Engineering Energy is a Bristol based company which provides 24 hour call out services to its customers, who are predominantly commercial caterers, data centres and restaurants utilising HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems).
In their business, the biggest challenge is caused by breakdown in the customer critical HVAC systems. In a commercial kitchen for example, if the extraction system were to fail the kitchen may need to close entirely until the system was returned to normal operation. This is obviously damaging to the business commercial aspects but also causes Engineering Energy pressure – they need to reinstate operation as quickly as possible in order to reduce the impact on their customer. Even with regular service and preventative maintenance it is not possible to completely eliminate breakdowns.
Managing director of Engineering Energy, Lee Coombes, looked across the market for a solution to this problem and after months of failed research decided to investigate the custom development of a system to analyse and report on the performance of the HVAC systems. He took his design and met with Paul Mullen of Cubik Innovation and over a period of months Cubik manufactured and demonstrated a system which could predict failure of HVAC systems, show when maintenance was required and even show when filters need changing.
Critical plant monitoring system – prototype
In addition to the failure early warning notification, the system will save a considerable amount of energy consumption in HVAC. This has been proven out and savings of 10% should be possible with further development.
Engineering Energy installed the prototype systems onto customer sites to carry out R&D and within a few months had raised early warning of a number of service issues, proving the power of the detection system instantly saving the customer money and a potential closure.
Lee Coombes commented “The solution designed by me and developed by Cubik Innovation has been really successful in field testing. It will save time, save system shutdown or failure but more importantly save money.” Lee said “The development process was very interesting and Cubik captured everything I wanted in the design and manufacture process. Time with Cubik was always useful, informative and unpressured”.
