An engineering dream that solves a real-world problem

Engineering Energy are a Bristol based company that provide 24 hour call out services to commercial caterers, data centres and restaurants who utilise Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems. HVAC systems provide heating and cooling to residential and commercial buildings and can be found anywhere, from single-family homes to submarines, where they provide the means for environmental comfort.

One of the biggest challenges Engineering Energy face is the customer critical HVAC systems breaking down. For example, in a commercial kitchen, if the extraction system were to fail it would create an unsafe environment to work in and the kitchen would need to close until the system was repaired. Even with regular service and preventative maintenance it is not possible to eliminate breakdowns which cause major disruption. To minimise the financial and commercial impact on their customer, Engineering Energy must reinstate the HVAC operation as quickly as possible.

Managing Director of Engineering Energy, Lee Coombes, looked across the market for a solution to this problem. After months of failed research, Lee decided to investigate the possibility of the custom development of a system that could analyse and report on the performance of the HVAC systems.

Lee took his design to Cubik MD, Paul Mullen. Over a period of months, Lee worked with Cubik to manufacture and demonstrate a system that could predict the failure of HVAC systems, show when maintenance was required and when filters need to be changed.

In addition to the early warning notification, the system proved to save a considerable amount of energy consumption.

Engineering Energy installed the prototype systems at their customer sites to carry out field testing. In just a few months, the system had raised early warning notifications for several major service issues. Engineering Energy were able to resolve the issues quickly and efficiently, reducing the financial impact on their customer and the risk of potential closure.

Speaking about his product and working with Cubik, Lee said:

“The solution designed by me and developed by Cubik Innovation has been successful in field testing. It will save time, save system failure or shutdown but more importantly save money.

The development process was interesting. Cubik captured everything I wanted in the design and manufacture process. The time I spent with Cubik was always useful, informative and unpressured”.

Cubik were subsequently selected as the manufacturing partner for the project.
