Pennant Training System Limited

Pennant Training Systems team, based out of the Head Office in Cheltenham, UK, approached Cubik Innovation to design and develop a Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit to be used in their simulation system.

The Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit, which is known as a Line Replacement Unit (LRU) in the aviation industry, will be installed within a part-task training system that Pennant Training Systems have developed. The trainer is based upon the cockpit design for an Advanced Jet Trainer.

The aim of the design was to replicate current in-service variants of the Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit in terms of fit, form and function.

For Cubik Innovation, this project demonstrates all the various design aspects they have in their arsenal for the complete electronic product design.

When Cubik Innovation first started, the majority of the projects were for the design and development of custom electronics and the firmware to run on them. As the company has grown and matured, projects such as this one with Pennant Training Systems, have proven that Cubik has the capability to not only undertake the electronic and firmware design, but also detailed and precise industrial design, as Cubik designed every element of the Standby VOR/ILS Control unit shown below.

The development of the Standby VOR/ILS unit encapsulated many of our facilities including:

  • Specification of the technical requirements of the project
  • Design and development of the enclosure to represent the original product
  • Design and development of the electronics to integrate with the simulator whilst remaining faithful to the original product
  • Using low volume manufacture to produce a batch of less than 10 units
  • EMC testing (to support a CE mark)
  • Generation of the embedded software to run within the unit
  • Generation of a PC test application to allow bench test of the units without the simulator
  • Careful project management to ensure that the delivery was made to budget and within timescales.
