Pennant Training System Limited
Pennant International Group plc was established over 50 years ago. The Group comprises six wholly owned subsidiaries and operates worldwide, with offices in Europe, North America and Australasia.
The Group is listed on AIM with the Head Office in Cheltenham, UK. Pennant’s growth has been organic, through a combination of product expansion, customer development and acquisition.
In addition to their operation centres worldwide, the Group has collaborative arrangements with a strategic range of partners and agents in many countries and can truly claim a global presence.
The Group’s range of complementary products and services is extensive and supported by a creative, innovative and highly trained team. They offer experience and expertise in Computer Based Training, e-learning, Virtual Reality, Emulation, Simulation, traditional and interactive Technical Documentation and Media services.
Pennant Training Systems team, based out of the Head Office in Cheltenham, UK, approached Cubik Innovation to design and develop a Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit to be used in their simulation system.
The Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit, which is known as a Line Replacement Unit (LRU) in the aviation industry, will be installed within a part-task training system that Pennant Training Systems have developed. The trainer is based upon the cockpit design for an Advanced Jet Trainer.
The aim of the design was to replicate current in-service variants of the Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit in terms of fit, form and function.
An artistic impression of the Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit is shown below;
For Cubik Innovation, this project demonstrates all the various design aspects they have in their arsenal for the complete electronic product design.
When Cubik Innovation first started, the majority of the projects were for the design and development of custom electronics and the firmware to run on them. As the company has grown and matured, projects such as this one with Pennant Training Systems, have proven that Cubik has the capability to not only undertake the electronic and firmware design, but also detailed and precise industrial design, as Cubik designed every element of the Standby VOR/ILS Control unit shown below.
The development of the Standby VOR/ILS unit encapsulated many of our facilities including:
- Specification of the technical requirements of the project
- Design and development of the enclosure to represent the original product
- Design and development of the electronics to integrate with the simulator whilst remaining faithful to the original product
- Using low volume manufacture to produce a batch of less than 10 units
- EMC testing (to support a CE mark)
- Generation of the embedded software to run within the unit
- Generation of a PC test application to allow bench test of the units without the simulator
- Careful project management to ensure that the delivery was made to budget and within timescales.
When asked about the work that was carried out by Cubik Innovation, David Selvester Head of Engineering at Pennant Training Systems Limited commented:
“This is the first time we have collaborated with Paul, Luke and the Cubik team on a design project. We found the whole process to be seamless and professional and look forward to working with them again in the future.”

Adrian Schmieder of HiETA commented: “Cubik’s quick turn-around of a functioning PCB has sped the delivery of the project and enabled me to focus on areas of the project in which HiETA has expertise. The project is a great success and produced valuable information even from its first use. I am very impressed with the support Cubik provided me throughout the project, from initial concept through to PCB delivery. I will not hesitate to engage with them again as future PCB projects arise.”
Speaking about the collaboration between Inductosense and Cubik Innovation, Founder and CTO Dr Chenghuan Zhong (Bamboo) stated: "It was great working with the knowledgeable and experienced team at Cubik Innovation. They always provide full support as well as useful and thoughtful advice to us, helping us find solutions for really difficult problems."
Geoff Jones, Aquabar Inventor: "It was a pleasure to work with Cubik on our project. Paul and Sam understood the concept at one meeting, and produced a solution filling the brief within two weeks which has enabled us to find a potential partner. We will certainly use Cubik for our production units later in the year, Many thanks."
Paul Davey, Associate Professor (SL) Plymouth University: "If you need a prototype developed to a high standard and on time you would be hard pushed to find someone better. They have highly trained, experienced engineers who get the job done."
