PENNANT INTERNATIONAL GROUP
Pennant Training System
Complete electronic product design, from concept to production
Pennant International Group plc offer experience and expertise in computer-based training, e-learning, virtual reality, emulation, simulation, traditional and interactive technical documentation, and media services. Their range of services and complimentary products is extensive and is supported by a creative, innovative, and highly trained team. Established more than 50 years ago, the group now comprises of six wholly owned subsidiaries and operates worldwide with offices in Europe, North America, and Australasia.
The Pennant Training Systems team, based in Cheltenham, approached Cubik for help with the design and development of a Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit. Also known in the aviation industry as a Line Replacement Unit (LRU), the Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit would be installed as part of a task training system that Pennant had developed. The trainer would then be placed upon the cockpit design for an Advanced Jet Trainer.
Cubik designed every element of the Standby VOR/ILS Control Unit. The aim of the design was to replicate real-life in-service variants of the unit in terms of fit, form and function.
This project demonstrates Cubik’s expertise across a range of design disciplines and utilises many of the resources we have in-house for complete electronic product design, including:
- Specification of the technical requirements of the project.
- Design and development of the enclosure to represent the original product.
- Design and development of the electronics to integrate with the simulator whilst remaining true to the original product.
- Using low volume manufacture to produce a batch of less than 10 units.
- EMC testing to support a CE mark.
- Generation of the embedded software to run within the unit.
- Generation of a PC test application to allow bench test of the units without the simulator.
- Careful project management to ensure that the delivery was made to budget and within timescales.
Speaking about working with Cubik, David Selvester, Head of Engineering at Pennant Training Systems Limited said:
“This is the first time we have collaborated with the Cubik team on a design project. We found the whole process to be seamless and professional and look forward to working with them again in the future.”
When Cubik Innovation first started, many of our projects focussed on the design and development of custom electronics and accompanying firmware. As the company has grown and matured, projects like this demonstrate that not only can Cubik undertake the electronic and firmware design, but we also have the capability to provide detailed and precise industrial design.
