Smartbox Power Pad
In 2017 Cubik Innovation were approached by Smartbox to carry out a design review of their Power Pad device. The design and development had already been successfully completed by Smartbox earlier in the year enabling them to then look to obtain the coveted CE mark. This led the Smartbox team to proceed with looking into fulfilling the requirements of the EMC directives, a requirement of the CE mark.
All electronic products sold in the EU must have the CE mark affixed, this usually involves some formal testing at a test laboratory. Whilst the undertaking of this process is documented, unforeseen issues can still arise during testing, so with this is in mind, Smartbox brought Cubik on-board to provide specialist expertise and to progress with the testing and development of their Power Pad device.
Cubik Innovation has a great track record when it comes to designing products to meet the requirements of the standards needed to CE mark a product. Using these proven skills to assist Smartbox, Cubik carried out a design iteration incorporating suitable techniques to mitigate the sort of issues that can arise in formal testing.
Cubik produced a batch of 5 assemblies which were used for formal test. Cubik Director Paul Mullen attended the test Lab with Smartbox and was pleased to note that the product was able to meet all the requirements set meaning that the device could be CE marked as hoped for.
Cubik look forward to supporting Smartbox with ongoing batches of their PCB assemblies.
Daniel Stead, Hardware Manager at Smartbox had this to say:
“Smartbox have been working with the team at Cubik to develop, prototype and manufacture our custom electronics. We have always received the highest standard of work from them and they have been instrumental in the development of our product, Power Pad. Furthermore, their supportive and versatile management of all aspects of their business is always evident, whether it be solving complex engineering problems or delivering to challenging deadlines. We hope and expect to continue this working relationship for many years to come.”

Adrian Schmieder of HiETA commented: “Cubik’s quick turn-around of a functioning PCB has sped the delivery of the project and enabled me to focus on areas of the project in which HiETA has expertise. The project is a great success and produced valuable information even from its first use. I am very impressed with the support Cubik provided me throughout the project, from initial concept through to PCB delivery. I will not hesitate to engage with them again as future PCB projects arise.”
Speaking about the collaboration between Inductosense and Cubik Innovation, Founder and CTO Dr Chenghuan Zhong (Bamboo) stated: "It was great working with the knowledgeable and experienced team at Cubik Innovation. They always provide full support as well as useful and thoughtful advice to us, helping us find solutions for really difficult problems."
Geoff Jones, Aquabar Inventor: "It was a pleasure to work with Cubik on our project. Paul and Sam understood the concept at one meeting, and produced a solution filling the brief within two weeks which has enabled us to find a potential partner. We will certainly use Cubik for our production units later in the year, Many thanks."
Paul Davey, Associate Professor (SL) Plymouth University: "If you need a prototype developed to a high standard and on time you would be hard pushed to find someone better. They have highly trained, experienced engineers who get the job done."
