A unique product, a unique challenge

Working with inventors, entrepreneurs and SME’s brings a variety of projects to our door but sometimes we get a request that is slightly more unusual than others. This was the case with London based advertising agency, Lean Mean Fighting Machine (LMFM) who approached Cubik with a rather unusual and somewhat urgent challenge.

They had put forward an idea to their client for a camera attachment that could be mounted on a hairspray canister to use during London Fashion Week. Their client had loved the idea and they needed a ready to use product, on location, within 3 weeks as part of their latest advertising campaign.

LMFM provided us with hand-drawn sketches and basic prototypes using hacked cameras. Following an initial investigation, we quickly established the products essential functions and aesthetics.

With such a tight deadline to complete the project, we headed straight into the design phase and were responsible for designing the enclosure, electronics, and software. To ensure the project progressed quickly, we formed clear lines of communication, a project work plan, and opportunities for quick design revisions. Once finalised, the project was passed over to our production team who carried out a batch build of 25 units.

SprayCam was used successfully at London Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week by the client. The completed product can be easily exchanged between canisters by the stylists to capture the excitement and behind the scenes action of the event. With help from our local approved partners we were also able to incorporate the clients visual branding within the timescales.

Cubik relish the opportunity for creative thinking, particularly when an idea needs to be executed quickly with little information to work from. SprayCam demonstrates perfectly not only the expert knowledge and skills of our team but the resources of the local electronics industry. If you have got an idea for a product, however unusual, we’d like to hear about it.

Adrian Schmieder of HiETA commented: “Cubik’s quick turn-around of a functioning PCB has sped the delivery of the project and enabled me to focus on areas of the project in which HiETA has expertise.  The project is a great success and produced valuable information even from its first use.  I am very impressed with the support Cubik provided me throughout the project, from initial concept through to PCB delivery.  I will not hesitate to engage with them again as future PCB projects arise.”

Speaking about the collaboration between Inductosense and Cubik Innovation, Founder and CTO Dr Chenghuan Zhong (Bamboo) stated: "It was great working with the knowledgeable and experienced team at Cubik Innovation. They always provide full support as well as useful and thoughtful advice to us, helping us find solutions for really difficult problems."

Geoff Jones, Aquabar Inventor: "It was a pleasure to work with Cubik on our project. Paul and Sam understood the concept at one meeting, and produced a solution filling the brief within two weeks which has enabled us to find a potential partner. We will certainly use Cubik for our production units later in the year, Many thanks."

Plymouth University

Paul Davey, Associate Professor (SL) Plymouth University: "If you need a prototype developed to a high standard and on time you would be hard pushed to find someone better. They have highly trained, experienced engineers who get the job done."

Clean Energy Prospector Ltd

Damon Rand, Head Product Design: "Paul and the team have really helped us speed up the turnaround on our prototypes and assure the manufacturability of our designs. If you’re designing electronics in the South-West, then Cubik is a great choice for short-run manufacturing."
