PCB manufacture
Engineering sponsorship
Power management
Dashboard indication
Team Bath Racing Electric brought together undergraduate engineering students at the University of Bath to design and develop a single-seat, open-wheel electric race car. Combining engineering and business studies, the project gave the students an opportunity to apply their learning to a complete vehicle.
Engineering student Guy Barkley approached Cubik while the team was seeking sponsorship for its 2016 car. The students needed support to turn two PCB designs into physical boards: one for power management and another for dashboard indication.
Manufacturing the boards was a practical step towards integrating the electronics into the vehicle ahead of the Formula Student event at Silverstone.
We agreed to support the team through PCB manufacture. Guy and fellow students Sam Bath and Aaron Forward developed the two designs, retaining responsibility for the engineering of their circuits.
Cubik received the completed design files and arranged manufacture of the boards for the team. This gave the students hardware they could integrate into the car while continuing to develop the wider vehicle.
The sponsorship complemented our support for students through internships and work experience, connecting academic learning with a live engineering project.
The team entered the 2016 Formula Student event at Silverstone. Although the car did not pass scrutineering, the project took the students from PCB design files through to electronics installed in an electric race car.
As they moved into the fourth year of their degrees, the team planned further development for the following year's Class 2 design event at Silverstone and other Formula Student events. Cubik's support helped provide a practical foundation for that next stage.
